Years ago, I read that there was a guide to colors of eye shadow one should wear based on your eye color. While I do not remember all of the rules, I remember that those with blue eyes should wear neutral to make the blue of their eyes pop more…while those with brown eyes (like myself) should wear purples and blues to make them pop more.
For the longest time, I broke the rules by wearing mostly neutrals and avoided blues/purples for fear of looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey show.
That being said – I’ve obviously over come my fear of bright colors. Since it’s been a hot minute since I tried a purple eye shadow look, I figured time to break out the Urban Decay Elements palette for some more playing.

Not sure that purple would be a go to color choice for me (I still like the neutrals, greens, blues, and golds) but I must admit that it gives my eyes a different look.
